Proceeds from this year’s art auction will go to help 15-year-old lion, Ruben, living alone in a private zoo in Armenia. Five years ago, the zoo closed, and the other animals removed. But Ruben was left behind and his world went quiet. He has not heard the voices of his own kind in all that time. When Ruben roars nobody roars back. Can you imagine not hearing a human voice for five years? Ruben deserves his chance at life. We want to take him to the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary, South Africa, to a huge natural habitat and the sight and sound of his own kind.

An Armenian sanctuary has agreed to be a temporary place of safety, provided ADI can fund Ruben’s care for the next several months, cover his veterinary procedures, process his export, and import permits, pay for his flight, and prepare a house and habitat for him at the ADIWS.

Thanks to ADI supporters, our GivingTuesday appeal raised $20,000 to take Ruben to a new life. These funds will be used in Armenia to transport Ruben to a temporary sanctuary and food and care there until his veterinary and wildlife permits are issued by the governments of Armenia and South Africa. We will also use some of the funds for a habitat for Ruben at ADIWS.

Once we have him safely in the sanctuary in Armenia, we must begin phase II. Funds from this auction will go towards Ruben’s travel crate, flights, road transport, and airport ground handling to bring Ruben home to the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary in South Africa, to his native homeland, where he will hear the voices of other lions, his new lion community.

Will you help transform Ruben’s life? MAKE A BID ON SATURDAY and share to help spread the word!

We will update you as soon as we know when Ruben can be moved to the temporary sanctuary home, as this is determined by weather and security levels. We hope it will be soon, but thanks to everyone’s efforts this week, we are ready to move Ruben as soon as possible.

Shannon

🐘 Title: Shannon
🐘 Artist name: Wendy Little
🐘 Art Medium: Photo print signed by the artist
🐘 Size: 11” x 14”, framed and matted
🐘 Starting bid: $75
🐘 Value: $150

Wendy fell in love with Shannon from the moment they first made eye contact. At that time, July 2013, Shannon and another elephant Cora were traveling as part of an “educational” elephant encounter in the US. They were forced to dance, play the tambourine, drink kool-aid, had loaves of bread shoved down their throats and were prodded with bullhooks by their trainers. Wendy took photos and wrote up her findings, and the organization she was volunteering for filed a report. They were able to get Shannon and Cora veterinary care on a few occasions and, over the years, Wendy continued to check on their welfare. After their owner passed away in 2016, the girls, as Wendy calls them, went to Topeka Zoo; sadly, Shannon did not thrive in this environment and passed away in December 2017.
“Through this photograph I hope to do two things” Wendy says. “One, honor Shannon’s life by telling people about her, while showing both her tremendous natural beauty coupled with a deep sadness from a life of confinement… Two, I hope to help Animal Defenders International… whose work is crucial in saving the lives of animals around the planet like Shannon and Cora. I know in my heart that Shannon would want to help other animals, too.”
The winner of this beautiful piece of art will receive a printed version of this story in full.

Vaquita

• Title: Vaquita
• Artist name: Rob Hill
• Art Medium: Original signed by the artist – pointillism pen illustration
• Size: 12” x 10” mounted
• Starting bid: £35 ($44)
• The vaquita is the world’s smallest and most endangered porpoise, living only in Mexico’s northern Gulf of California. Pushed to the brink by totoaba and shrimp fishing, vaquitas become trapped in the nets and die. Estimates indicate there are less than 20 animals left in the wild. “Having been involved with whale and dolphin rescue and being aware of the many threats to their survival around the world, the plight of the vaquita inspired me to create this piece”.

Tim of Amboseli

🐘 Artist: Claire Milligan
🐘 Title: ‘Tim of Amboseli’
🐘 Medium: Signed and numbered by the artist – limited edition print (double mounted) of original coloured pencil drawing
🐘 Size: 16 x 20″, certificate of authenticity included
🐘 Starting bid: £60 ($75)
🐘 Value: £85 ($105)
“Tim was sadly one of the last few great tuskers remaining in Africa. Every single day he faced every threat possible to an elephant. Tim sadly died aged 50 on the very same day I completed this drawing – a tragic and sad day yet a haunting but warming feeling to have captured this icon creature who has captured the hearts of many over his 50 years. His legend will live on.
This drawing is my most complex drawing to date, with over 100 hours of drawing gone into it. I felt hugely inspired to draw Tim with the complexities of the elephant’s old skin, the moody strong lightning and I felt compelled to draw this creature’s soul. Elephants have always felt close to my heart, and this drawing now sits as one of my all time favourite wildlife drawings.” https://www.clairemilliganart.com/…/pre-order-elephant…
