Kimba has been admitted to hospital today for an assessment by Dr Caldwell and possible surgery on his right eye.

The Resident Welfare Team at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary had noticed periodic issues with his eye and in May Dr Caldwell had raised concerns regarding a cataract and Kimba’s overall vision. Over the past week there has been discolouration to the eye so it was felt best to admit him for a full assessment. 

Eye problems are common in rescued big cats, often due to poor nutrition before they are rescued, and several lions at ADIWS including Smith and both Kiaras have needed to have eyes removed.  All have continued to thrive after surgery and so if it is necessary for Kimba it should not impact  his quality of life. Although extremely successful in humans, the post-operative care required makes it very difficult in lions and likely to fail and cause more problems.

15 year old Kimba has osteoporosis, due to to poor nutrition prior to arrival at ADIWS, and in 2022 a series of hairline fractures were identified along his spine. He is on supplements, similar to those some older supporters may be familiar with, and while in Old Chapel Veterinary Clinic he will get a thorough health check including examination of his spine.

Kimba and brother Tomas were born in the same circus in Guatemala and were reunited at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary where they are very close friends.  Tomas will be missing his friend and so our team will give him extra attention and we are sure that their neighbour Sasha will also provide company, much as she did when Tomas was in hospital last year.
