We are thrilled that Lupe is returning to the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary after her stay at Old Chapel Vet Clinic to examine an eye injury – we were all concerned that she might lose the eye, but Dr. Caldwell feels that surgery is not needed at this stage, and is happy for her to come home.
Following his initial examination, Dr Caldwell brought in a specialist ophthalmologist, who examined her on Saturday – we await results from Saturday’s tests. Lupe has a corneal ulcer (keratitis) which may have been caused by an injury, or from corneal problems due to early age malnutrition (common in ex-circus animals) or indeed both.
Lupe’s care needs are complex due to her other health issues resulting from her life in the circus in Guatemala, including seizures and allergies to hay and other bedding (her son, Max, has similar allergies) – these allergies could also be a factor in the eye injury. During her time in hospital, we have made some changes to her night house and care plan, in preparation for the coming winter. This includes a new underfloor heating system and also, we can continue to explore dust-free bedding options.
