In August, before we loaded lonely lion Ruben into his travel crate in Armenia, he was barely able to walk a few paces without stumbling and falling. Since arriving at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary, his resilience and determination to walk has inspired us all. On Tuesday, many of you watched us live as Dr Peter Caldwell examined Ruben and evaluated his progress.

The past months have seen Ruben’s mobility improve, he can stay on his feet longer and his desire to play is undiminished, but we wondered whether Ruben was ready for the next phase of his habitat – a half-acre, more challenging and natural space? YES! With a few modifications to the habitat, which we quickly made, Dr Caldwell felt the indomitable Ruben was ready! So, Ruben eagerly stepped out into the new habitat yesterday, explored then settled in the longer grass. It felt like a giant step for the old warrior. In the late afternoon he wandered back into the feeding camp section which has been home until now, and happily took his medications before dinner.
We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has helped Ruben get this far, but please remember that there is still a long way to go with veterinary treatment, rehabilitation, and care. Please keep supporting us.
