It has lifted our spirits to see Smith looking more like his old self – although still showing signs where he was shaved for scans during his prolonged stay in hospital. Smith’s heart condition is serious, and we are in uncharted territory in terms of treatment.
Under veterinary instructions Smith is in our quietest habitat, Sam&Eric, and is now exploring its full 6+ acres. He seems settled and has struck up a friendship with Bumba from Colombia, next door. Smith cannot share his old habitat with Rey as he must be kept calm and quiet but, we are pleased to say, they both seem very settled and can see and hear each other. Smith is taking his medication each day and is being closely monitored.
Smith is a huge castrated lion (that is why he has no mane) who became internationally famous when he dragged a person around the ring during an irresponsible circus performance in Peru. Despite calls for him to be killed, ADI was able to move in and save Smith and the other animals.
