Could this couple be any sweeter?

Tarzan and Tanya pictured doing what they love most: snuggling together under the African sun. It’s the peaceful life they deserve after their years of suffering in a circus in Guatemala. They have now been at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary for three years, and they couldn’t look more relaxed and content.

As many of you know, it costs $1,300 per month to care for a lion or tiger at ADIWS. Can you help support Tarzan and Tanya’s care by adopting them?

Adopt a lion this World Lion Day

Can you believe nobody has adopted circus survivors Kimba, David, Kiara2, Mahla and Scarc yet?
Kimba was rescued from a circus in Guatemala, the others from Peru.

When we rescue animals, we aren’t just emptying the cages, we’re also committing to providing a lifetime of care.

There are so many costs involved: food, enrichment, dietary supplements (especially essential for our seniors), hospital transport, constructing habitats and adapting them to cater to their individual needs.

Happy Watermelon Day

Who knew lions LOVE watermelons! And what better time to prove it than today, 3 August, otherwise known as National Watermelon Day!

For Mahla, pictured, and our other rescued lions, getting their teeth into a juicy watermelon provides them with fun, stimulation and enrichment. It’s a far cry from the life of physical and mental deprivation they once endured in circuses.

You can help lions like Mahla continue to enjoy watermelons and other enrichments by adopting her or making a donation to the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary.

Another romantic sunset for Tarzan and Tanya

The world’s most loving lions are settling in for the evening at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary, South Africa. They stuck with each other through thick and thin in a circus in Guatemala before they were rescued by ADI. In the circus a tiger tore apart Tarzan’s face as tiny Tanya battled to protect him. Last year, our veterinary team gave him a partial lip lift to repair much of the damage. For those of you who remember Tarzan when we first rescued him, you can see the significant improvement in this picture. You may also get a chance to meet this magical pair live of Facebook this weekend.

WE WILL BE LIVE ON FACEBOOK FROM ADIWS SATURDAY (17th) & SUNDAY (18th) 5pm (South Africa); 4pm (UK); 11am (EST); 8am (PST).

Fathers of the prides

Ahead of Father’s Day, we look back on the rescues of ADI Wildlife Sanctuary dads Leo and Rey Cusco and their families. Take a moment to look what they came from and where they are now.

On the first day of ADI’s operation to empty circuses following Peru’s ban, Leo and his boys Coco, Chino and Rolex were rescued. However, the circus blocked the removal of the lionesses and escaped into hiding. Months later, ADI tracked them down, saving Leo’s beloved Muñeca and daughters Africa and Kiara2, reuniting them before settling them in Africa.

Cuddling like pretzels

Could these recently reunited brothers, rescued from a circus in Guatemala, be any closer? Tomas and Kimba opted to sleep just outside of their new A frame at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary (clearly, there is more than one way to enjoy it). These A frames made out of branches are really popular among our residents as they allow them to enjoy shade while still being able to see what’s going on in the world around them.

Help Tarzan and Tanya stay cozy this winter

Tarzan and Tanya’s love keeps them warm, but let’s ensure they are extra cozy! Winter has officially begun in South Africa and the coldest nights will be in July. Steadily, the ADIWS team have been preparing: screwing heavy rubber insulation onto dens under platforms, building up hay bales for insulation, and filling the dens and houses with very deep, soft teff hay.

Can you help keep our sanctuary lovebirds and our other circus survivors warm? A donation of R450 each (£18.50 / $23.50) buys one teff bedding roll.

Brothers Tomas and Kimba

A picture that says it was worth all those months carefully reuniting brothers Tomas and Kimba at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary. Separated by a circus in Guatemala and then rescued separately by ADI, the brothers were not believed to have been together for many years. Bringing two adult male lions together has to be approached with caution, carefully moving forward and with them close to each other and seeing how they interact. But lions are social animals and companionship means the world to them, as this image shows.

Solar power

Tarzan and Tanya bask in the sun’s last rays at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary. As well as seeing two lions who escaped the misery of a circus in Guatemala to come home to their natural world in Africa, we are also seeing the greatest energy asset of the ADIWS go down for the day. This year, ADI is increasing its commitment to reduce carbon emissions and fight climate change by making the entire sanctuary solar powered. Please support this and watch out for updates.
