Dhubiya on alert

Curious Dhubiya is always interested in what’s going on around her at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary. Some might even call her the “nosy neighbor”. The bold, playful lioness, rescued from the illegal wildlife pet trade in Kuwait, loves to get into everything and see what everyone is doing. It’s so heartwarming to see that her harrowing past hasn’t dampened her zest for life.

Please continue to support our young lioness – she can live up to 20 years at ADIWS with your help. Donate £ /Euros /Rand | Donate US$ /CA$

Up close with Kimba

The beauty of the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary is that our rescued lions and tigers have the freedom to be seen or unseen – our smallest habitats are 2.5 acres. The lions and tigers can stay as far away as they want. That’s. why it’s always an privilege when any of the animals come and check us out – because it’s their choice. Kimba was one of the first animals we rescued from a circus in Guatemala during ADI’s operation to enforce the country’s animal circus ban. He lives at ADIWS with brother Tomas.

A king in any language

The indomitable Rey Cusco rules over the vast Stephanides Habitat at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary. It’s hard to believe that next month marks the start of ADI’s Operation Spirit of Freedom in Peru – a two year mission emptying every circus cage following the country’s ban on wild animal acts. Rey was rescued in the city of Cusco high in the Andes mountains (hence his name) and later flew with 32 other lions to South Africa. Our thanks to Lion Lovers Facebook group who sponsored Rey’s individual rescue ten years ago.

Celebrate his rescueversary with a donation to support his care. Every bit helps.

Beautiful like his father

Leo lives on through his children, like stunning Rolex here, enjoying the sunshine at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary during South Africa’s winter.

Next month marks 10 years since the family was rescued from a circus in Peru during ADI’s Operation Spirit of Freedom, enforcing the country’s wild animal circus ban. Ahead of their big anniversary, please consider donating toward Rolex’s care so he can continue to enjoy many more years in the land of his forefathers, where he was meant to be.

David basking in the sun

David looks very much at peace, basking in the sun at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary, South Africa. This October marks 10 years since his rescue from a circus in Peru. He has certainly come a long way from where he was used as a circus prop and had never left his cage. Camo Habitat is David’s very own piece of Africa with grasslands, trees, and the sights and sounds of native wildlife, he has rediscovered what it is to be a lion again.

Kiara in relaxed mode

Like catnip, the A-frames are very popular with our ADI Wildlife Sanctuary residents, including beautiful Kiara2 of Hurral. She looks very relaxed and comfortable in the shade of her A-frame, where she is tucked away, and can watch the small wildlife and other goings-on, while enjoying the cool breeze.

This year, Kiara2, daughter of Leo and Muñeca, celebrates the 10th anniversary of her rescue from a circus in Hurral, Peru. She is now 16 years old and is one of our senior lionesses at ADIWS. Please help keep her happy and content in her native Africa. Donate US $ | UK £

Kesari back home having fun in the sun

We are as delighted as his neighbours Coco, Chino, Rey Ayacucho and Simba, that Kesari arrived home last night after a stay with Dr Peter Caldwell at Old Chapel Veterinary Clinic. He is back in the sunshine at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary today and is being treated for a bladder infection. The problem is believed to have been caused by him drinking less in the colder winter nights, so we will be taking boosting his water intake with blood and water ice lollies. Kesari has lost weight and we will be monitoring this, but it is great to have him home.

Dhubiya in catnip heaven

It’s all fun and games for the bold and playful young lioness at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary. She seems proud of herself for having demolished her catnip sack. Dhubiya has an incredible spirit despite her harrowing past. A victim of the illegal lion pet trade, she was left to die in the desert outside Kuwait City – either dumped by a trafficker or an owner no longer wanting a lion as a status symbol ‘pet’.
