Save the Date: GivingTuesday, November 28

Since the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary was founded in 2018, our efforts have gone into providing state-of-the-art facilities for the animals – from huge habitats fed with spring water, to night houses, food storage, security fencing, and guards. This GivingTuesday, we hope you can help us to care for our staff who care for our rescued residents seven days a week to provide food, medications, love, respect, and protection.

Please show our carers how much you appreciate them by helping us to complete their Staff Village to make living on the Sanctuary easier. This is a gift to the animals, too, because they need our team to be at the top of their game every day.

Those of you who follow our Facebook lives will know our team, but what you may not know is that they have been temporarily camped in an old farmhouse. They deserve a comfortable place to retreat after a long, hard day.

You can also start your own GivingTuesday Facebook fundraiser here.

Help Matilda and friends

Will you help ADIWS provide a home for Matilda the cow, eight goats, two sheep, and a family of three horses?

The ADI Wildlife Sanctuary (ADIWS) is a paradise for rescued lions and tigers and has become a beacon of hope for other animals across our region of South Africa, where there are very limited facilities for animals saved from abuse. Tragically, when animals in distress are confiscated, there is often nowhere for them to go. At ADIWS we have the space to answer some of these calls for help and aid the enforcement of animal protection laws. But with new species arriving, we need to ensure we can cover the fencing, food, care and veterinary costs.

New canvas prints available in the ADI store

Is there a special animal or two you are always eager to get updates on? The animals who always put a big smile on your face whenever you see their picture or video? Light up your room with stunning canvas prints of the rescued animals you love. Your purchase also helps support their care. We have a new selection ahead of the holiday season, featuring world-famous Ruben, sanctuary sweethearts Tarzan and Tanya, playful Jade, stunning Stripes, and the venerable Leo. Several supporters have also asked about canvas prints to remember dear Bumba, so we have added several images to our store – poignant portraits of the peaceful life Bumba enjoyed, thanks to ADI supporters.

RUBEN READY FOR HALLOWEEN.

We have launched our ADI Wildlife Sanctuary Annual Halloween Pumpkin Appeal and Ruben has a head start, getting daily pumpkins and other toys as part of the routine to aid his physiotherapy. Ruben seems to enjoy every form of enrichment we have given him so far!

The lions and tigers love playing with these treats, so will you help give everyone some Halloween fun? With your help, we will be publishing pictures in the build-up to Halloween as Ruben and his friends react to their treats and watch out for the new ADIWS Annual Halloween video.

This year, to secure their future, half of the pumpkin donation ($7.50/£6) will go to our care costs. Or, you can be a ‘golden pumpkin sponsor’ supporting a pumpkin and a full day’s care for a lion of tiger ($64/£50). Or you might want to be super generous and go for our ‘One-For-All’ option – a pumpkin for every cat ($232.50/£186). Let’s see if we can raise enough to keep the cats in treats all the way to Christmas!

Not a care in the world after huge wildfire

Siblings Africa, Kiara2 and Rolex are clearly relaxed after a huge wildfire was stopped from entering the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary yesterday. The alarm was sounded about a fast-moving fire 25 miles away. The ADIWS team loaded our fire fighters and began bringing the lions and tigers into their safe zones. Within 40 minutes 26 lions and tigers were in the feeding camps and the ground was being soaked. Five lions were taking their time coming in – father Leo and children Africa and Kiara2, and Tarzan and Tanya (who never hurry for anyone). Nevertheless the team persevered and everyone was in their safe zones within an hour of the alarm – unsurprisingly, Leo was the last to potter in. Strong winds drove the fire and it reached our north and west perimeters about four hours later, where it was stopped by the brave efforts of our team. See video of the shocking events earlier.

Please support our ongoing investment in fire prevention measures and keep these animals sleeping blissfully. Donate here

Ruben is home at last

We did it!

Thanks to you, our fantastic supporters, Ruben is now safe in the land of his ancestors: Africa. As we watched Ruben take his first, magical steps onto South African soil on Friday morning, it made the trials and tribulations of the past 14 months worth it.

We were in Armenia for the countdown, finalizing his travel crate, and right up to take off we were facing obstruction, additional costs, and red tape.

How a Facebook group helped save Rey

Mighty Rey licking his lips! He was rescued from a circus in Cusco, Peru, as ADI enforced the country’s ban on wild animals in circuses. He crossed the Andes and then the world to come home to the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary in South Africa.

Diana Bell Miller and her Lion Lovers Facebook group committed to saving one of the lions during ADI’s Operation Spirit of Freedom (33 lions were saved), and chose Rey.
