Scarc on a pumpkin hunt

Scarc sniffs around Tohir Habitat at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary and finds a pumpkin. Thank you to everyone who has been sponsoring these Halloween treats – watch out for the lions and tigers having Halloween fun all of this week.

Scarc was just a cub when we rescued him from a circus in Peru but has grown into a magnificent lion in our care. This year our Halloween pumpkin appeal contributes a pumpkin and to the care needed to keep Scarc healthy and strong.

RUBEN READY FOR HALLOWEEN.

We have launched our ADI Wildlife Sanctuary Annual Halloween Pumpkin Appeal and Ruben has a head start, getting daily pumpkins and other toys as part of the routine to aid his physiotherapy. Ruben seems to enjoy every form of enrichment we have given him so far!

The lions and tigers love playing with these treats, so will you help give everyone some Halloween fun? With your help, we will be publishing pictures in the build-up to Halloween as Ruben and his friends react to their treats and watch out for the new ADIWS Annual Halloween video.

This year, to secure their future, half of the pumpkin donation ($7.50/£6) will go to our care costs. Or, you can be a ‘golden pumpkin sponsor’ supporting a pumpkin and a full day’s care for a lion of tiger ($64/£50). Or you might want to be super generous and go for our ‘One-For-All’ option – a pumpkin for every cat ($232.50/£186). Let’s see if we can raise enough to keep the cats in treats all the way to Christmas!

This is my territory

The magnificent Rey Cusco scent marks one of the native trees in his Stephanides Habitat at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary. It’s just one of the many natural behaviors our rescued lions (and tigers) get to express now that they enjoy freedom of choice in an environment as close as possible to what nature intended.

Rey was rescued by ADI along with his family from a circus in Peru.

Can you chip in to help plant more trees for Rey and our other big cats? Donate here

Ruben’s catnip madness

You can see Ruben still loves his catnip treats! Ruben was rescued from years of isolation and confinement in a private zoo in Armenia. He arrived at the ADI Wildlife in August with difficulties walking and keeping his balance. Every day, the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary Team give him different forms of enrichment to keep him engaged, moving and having fun. And he is loving his physiotherapy!

Kesari anniversary

This week marked four years since the mighty Kesari arrived at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary. We watched with bated breath as his crate was opened, and then…. Nothing. We stepped away and let him come out in his own time. He finally slipped out and went straight into a den – check out the last pic of Jan and Tim creeping up to see how he was. It took a few days before cautious Kesari roared.

Mahla the footballer

Fun-loving Mahla is a kitten at heart, seizing any opportunity to play in her Tohir Habitat. Here she shows the Robust-A-Ball who’s boss. She was rescued as a cub from a circus in Peru, along with her family. Confined to her circus cage, she had no opportunity to exercise and play, let alone stretch. At the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary in South Africa, she enjoys an array of enrichment, and space to run and play, but importantly, freedom of choice.

Help keep the fun going by donating toward more enrichment for Mahla and her family. Donate here.

Mighty Kesari

Kesari makes objects look smaller than they appear. He also doesn’t know his own strength – he leaned against his A frame and it collapsed! Our ADI Wildlife Sanctuary team has since rebuilt it, but it just goes to show how big Kesari is.

The A frames are a favorite among our rescued lions, including Ruben. They provide shade while still allowing the occupants to watch events and feel the breeze, especially now that it’s spring.
Kesari needed a home after he was driven out by his pride at Pretoria Zoo. ADI stepped in to offer him a forever home. He lives in the Joan & Geoff Phillips Habitat and is friends with neighbors Coco and Chino on one side and Simba and ReyA on the other, and one habitat away from his new neighbor, Ruben.

David marking his territory

We’ve all seen our house cats do some form of this, but did you know lions do, too? Here is handsome David scent marking the vegetation in his Camo Habitat.

David was rescued from a circus in Peru where he was used as a prop and had never left his cage. Now at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary, he has four acres of space, freedom of choice, and an enriched environment to express his natural behaviors.

To plant more trees and shrubs for David and our other big cats, donate here.
