Festive fun for rescued big cats and other animals!

Our very best wishes for a Happy Holiday from all of us at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary, with our grateful thanks for your support during 2023! At the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary in South Africa, our rescued lions, tigers, donkeys, goats, pigs, sheep, and cow are already into their presents.

Our big cat residents at ADIWS enjoy large natural habitats where they can explore, stalk, chase small wildlife, sleep, or play but like all cats, they love anything interesting and new, especially new toys!

Thank you to everyone who contributed towards their festive treats, you can see here:

Festive treats for rescued animals

We’d like to start with news of a new addition to our ADI Wildlife Sanctuary in time for Christmas. One of our family of donkeys has given birth to a beautiful foal. She has been checked by the veterinarian and is doing well.

The donkeys came to the sanctuary in May after being abandoned at a holiday lodge which had closed. ADIWS does not allow breeding, so Christopher the male was neutered on arrival. However, nobody knew the status of the females, and a donkey pregnancy can last up to 14 months! We did suspect that one female looked rather round and are delighted to welcome a new baby to the donkey family, being called Nugget.

Here comes Ruben’s summer!

Yes, it’s officially summer in South Africa and Ruben is soaking up the sun and enjoying his first ever ice lolly! It’s another form of enrichment and stimulation for Ruben, and being made from glucose and electrolyte solution mixed with blood, these are cooling and helping Ruben’s hydration.

You can still be ‘Ruben Cool’ by purchasing his own special apparel raising funds for his lifelong care, including the veterinary treatment needed due to his years of confinement in a tiny zoo cell in Armenia. Order here

Upcycled enrichment is a win-win

ReyA is clearly enjoying his hay-filled coffee bag enrichment at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary. Our thanks to Highland Coffee Roastery for donating their empty coffee bags so that we can turn them into giant enrichment bags filled with hay and various scents the lions and tigers love. Although they have huge enclosures where they can chase, play, stalk the local wildlife, this kind of enrichment adds extra interest and variety and maintains their relationships with their carers. Remember how much fun they had with their Halloween pumpkins? You can still sponsor a pumpkin today, and part of it will go towards a day’s care for a lion or tiger. Let’s see if we can give them more pumpkins throughout the rest of the year. Sponsor a pumpkin

House swap

‘Spice Girls’ Jade, Luna, Sun, and Moon are given access to an empty habitat twice a week for enrichment at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary, South Africa. The ADIWS Resident Welfare Team is always coming up with new ways to enrich the lives of our rescued lions and tigers, and this is just one example. The sisters like to explore every inch of the empty habitat, especially playful Jade who has great fun bouncing around.

Happy Halloween

It’s proving a fantastic Halloween 2023 at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary thanks to everyone who donated pumpkin treats for the rescued lions and tigers. All of the residents react differently, but you can see how much these treats mean, so do please keep giving so that the animals can keep having fun. Keep watching for classic Leo doing it his way at the end! Thank you to everyone who helped give them a Happy Halloween 2023!

You can still sponsor pumpkins. Anything else we raise will help keep the lions and tigers in treat for the rest of the year, while supporting their care. Donate here

Ruben’s happy Halloween

It’s our magnificent old warrior’s very first Halloween celebration at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary. What must he think of all the new scents, textures, and tastes after years of deprivation in his tiny zoo cell in Armenia? He’s liked every treat put before him, including pumpkins and he loved getting these first Halloween pumpkins this weekend. Thank you to everyone who has been sponsoring pumpkins for Ruben and our other rescued big cats – you’ve also helped contribute to their care.

Lions and tigers in the Halloween mood

The lions and tigers at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary love finding new things in their habitats and they all react in their own way to pumpkins and other enrichment. Thanks to everyone who has been sponsoring pumpkins while supporting a day’s care for a lion or tiger. It currently costs an average of $60 per day for each residents’ food, care, maintenance, etc. at ADIWS. The animals love their treats, but they especially love their dinner! Donate here.

Make Ruben’s first Halloween extra special

Will you give Ruben and the other lions and tigers at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary a Halloween treat? This year, when you sponsor a pumpkin, part of it will go towards caring for our rescued big cats. We have three options: Individual pumpkins; ‘Golden pumpkins’ that fund a full day’s care as well; and ‘One-for-all’ a pumpkin for every lion and tiger (links in comments). Ruben has shown he loves all the enrichment he gets including his pumpkins so he’s going to love Halloween and we hope all the other cats will too. Any extra raised will go towards enrichment for the rest of the year.
