Out in Africa!

Shujaa is the first of the Kuwait 6 lions to head out into their main habitats at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary following a period of quarantine and observation. Doesn’t he look right at home? A lion where he should be, home in Africa. Once he was dumped, an unwanted status symbol pet, on the streets of Kuwait City, now he has his own 4 acres of natural African habitat to share with brother Saham. Cautious Saham has not ventured out yet, but Shujaa was quick to explore, smell the trees and scent mark.

Saif tackles his catnip sack

When ADI visited Kuwait Zoo to meet the lions rescued from the pet trade and needing homes, friendly Saif just wanted to be loved. He had a zest and hope for life in his eyes, excited about everything. Now, he has his whole life ahead of him in our place of loving kindness where he can play with his catnip sack until it is destroyed, move onto the teff hay insulation bales, and take them apart, too. He can do no wrong. We are looking forward to the day he gives voice when the sanctuary residents sing their morning and evening songs. Thank you for supporting dear Saif!

Luna alert

Something catches Luna’s eye at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary – perhaps one of her sisters Jade, Sun and Moon (‘Spice Girls’) or the local wildlife they love to chase.

Before ADI rescued them from a circus in Guatemala, Luna and Jade shared a cage the size of a queen-size bed – no space and nothing to interest them. Now in their tiger territory, which features two pools and a lake, they have the space and freedom to do whatever they please.

Shujaa’s house

One of the most moving things when we first rescue any animals who have suffered at the hands of humans, is how they respond to having their own houses and spaces, even toys. It is heartbreaking to see how much it means to them to have something of their own, moving things around their habitats as they please, nobody telling them what to do. We will never forget how we saw Ruben gather all his enrichment together, carrying them into his A-Frame sun shelter. It reminds us of how absolutely everything that gives joy and makes life worthwhile, is taken from these animals. Our job is to give back that sense of self-determination, freedom, and joy for life among their own kind.

Shujaa is now halfway through his quarantine period, since arriving last week from Kuwait where he was rescued with brother Saham from the illegal wildlife trade. Soon he will have access to a 4 acre natural habitat, three platform dens similar to this plus his brick built house.

Dhubiya’s first steps in Africa

As lioness Dhubiya gains in confidence (first pic) and bounces around her habitat at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary, South Africa, tearing down hay bales and tearing up catnip sacks, it is hard to believe it was just a week ago today that she made those first tentative steps out onto African soil. Rescued from the illegal wildlife trade in Kuwait, the young lioness survived being dumped to die in the desert by a callous owner who’d tired of having a ‘pet’ lion. Now, she has made it home to Africa on the airlift of the #Kuwait6! Relive those first momentous steps as last Tuesday morning, the door to her house opened and Dhubiya looked out, with Saif watching behind her as she cautiously stepped forward. Through the night she had heard the roars of the other lions, and now African soil was beneath her paws. We wonder what she was thinking?

Curious and playful Sun

Curious and playful Sun spots something from afar at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary – maybe she’s seen the arrival of the Kuwait 6 in the distance. Sun is one of the four sisters (the ‘Spice Girls’) ADI rescued from a circus in Guatemala. She and sister Moon were rescued when they were just six months old, and sisters Luna and Jade at 18 months old. They have a wonderful sense of play – often chasing birds and small wildlife, destroying stacks of hay bales, and soaking or splashing in their pools.

Muheeb settling in and having fun

Muheeb is so quiet like Ruben, we wanted him to inherit Ruben’s habitat. It had originally been planned for him and Aziza to be next door to Ruben. Muheeb will be in this section for two weeks’ quarantine and then go out into the main habitat. These are the ‘introduction’ habitats before they move to their permanent space. We really hope that Muheeb will make friends with Aziza next door, and if all goes really well, perhaps all four of Muheeb, Aziza, Dubhiya and Saif will be together. It will take a few months. Not sure we have enough catnip punchbags – he demolishes them so quickly😂 Just like Ruben, he loves these bags and carries them into his house to watch over them.

‘Pet’ lions who were abandoned to die, start new life in Africa

You did it! The Kuwait 6 lions are home at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary.

Eleven days ago, we arrived in Kuwait to oversee the rescue of the Kuwait 6 lions – Muheeb, Saham, Shujaa, Saif, Dhubiya, and Aziza. We worked on the final paperwork, assessed the lions, planned the loading, confirmed truck rentals, and oversaw reconstruction of the travel crates we had sent flat-packed from South Africa. Our veterinarian Dr. Peter Caldwell arrived, confirmed the lions were fit to travel, and we were ready to go.

Shujaa versus the punchbag

It might just be the best sight of the week. Shujaa, one of the six lions rescued from Kuwait’s illegal wildlife trade who arrived at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary on Monday night, tackles a Kunduchi catnip punchbag. The lion, who was rescued after being left in the streets of Kuwait City, stepped out of his house cautiously. We wonder what he and his brother, Saham, were thinking as they looked out onto their native homeland of Africa. One thing certainly caught Shujaa’s eye and it was the catnip bag. He battled it for a while before he finally tore it down and carried it proudly into his house to destroy!
