There’s nothing quite like seeing animals that have been confined and abused expressing their lust for life after a rescue. These four horses were found hobbled in a South African township street, now they roam free on the 455-acre ADI Wildlife Sanctuary site. Enjoy this phone clip taken walking the dogs a few days ago. Have a great weekend.
A king in any language

The indomitable Rey Cusco rules over the vast Stephanides Habitat at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary. It’s hard to believe that next month marks the start of ADI’s Operation Spirit of Freedom in Peru – a two year mission emptying every circus cage following the country’s ban on wild animal acts. Rey was rescued in the city of Cusco high in the Andes mountains (hence his name) and later flew with 32 other lions to South Africa. Our thanks to Lion Lovers Facebook group who sponsored Rey’s individual rescue ten years ago.
Celebrate his rescueversary with a donation to support his care. Every bit helps.

Beautiful like his father

Leo lives on through his children, like stunning Rolex here, enjoying the sunshine at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary during South Africa’s winter.
Next month marks 10 years since the family was rescued from a circus in Peru during ADI’s Operation Spirit of Freedom, enforcing the country’s wild animal circus ban. Ahead of their big anniversary, please consider donating toward Rolex’s care so he can continue to enjoy many more years in the land of his forefathers, where he was meant to be.

Continue readingStunning Stripes

This is the life we dreamed of for Stripes when we rescued him and brother Max from a tiny circus cage in Guatemala. Tiny cubs back then they were passed around for people to cuddle and take photos with them. The boys have grown big and powerful in the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary, South Africa, with acres to roam and two pools to play in.

Brothers’ antics

The A-frames have been a popular enrichment at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary, and thankfully have withstood the strength of the lions, as demonstrated by Kimba and Tomas. The boys decided the A-frames are multifunctional, as they like to stretch or scratch on them when they’re not snoozing inside. Here, Kimba gets a good stretch in, perhaps after a nap.

Something has caught Stripes’ attention at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary. It could be his new lion neighbors Muheeb, Aziza, Saif, and Dhubiya – or perhaps the native wildlife, which our rescued tigers love to chase. This is life now for these big cats – one that allows them to express their instincts in natural, wild space.
We rescued Stripes and his family from a circus in Guatemala. He shares his habitat with his dear brother Max, and the two are rarely apart despite them living in our largest tiger territory, Kakato Habitat by April Fong.
Help support Stripes’ care so he can keep that curious spirit, play, and explore for many more years to come. Donate UK £ | US $
David basking in the sun

David looks very much at peace, basking in the sun at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary, South Africa. This October marks 10 years since his rescue from a circus in Peru. He has certainly come a long way from where he was used as a circus prop and had never left his cage. Camo Habitat is David’s very own piece of Africa with grasslands, trees, and the sights and sounds of native wildlife, he has rediscovered what it is to be a lion again.

From circus cages to African grasslands

Six years on, this is life for siblings Tomas, Kimba and Sasha at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary. Kimba and Sasha were the first animals we rescued from a circus in Guatemala during Operation Liberty, to enforce the country’s ban on animal acts. Tomas had already been handed over to a zoo before the ban came into force, but when the zoo no longer had space for him, we were given just 25 minutes’ notice to make room for him at the ADI Temporary Rescue Unit in Guatemala. In January 2020, they made the epic 34-hour journey to South Africa.
These days, they enjoy acres of natural habitat to roam, run, and express themselves – as close as possible to life in the wild.

Lupe on the prowl

It’s great to see 12-year-old Lupe roaming Kakato Habitat by April Fong, expressing her natural instincts. Rescued from a circus in Guatemala, Lupe is still fighting the impacts of her life in the circus. She suffers seizures due to inbreeding and early-age malnutrition in the circus, but she is treated with daily medications and continues to be monitored by veterinarian Dr Caldwell. The ADI Wildlife Sanctuary team is on alert for any problems.

This is the face of pure contentment. Rolex can sleep soundly knowing he is safe, cared for, and can live like a lion at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary. This year marks 10 years since Rolex was rescued along with his family from a circus in Peru. He is the son of Leo and Muñeca.
Help Rolex continue to rest easy without a care in the world.
