This week the sun has been blazing hot at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary (ADIWS) with the temperature hitting 44 degrees Celsius / 111 degrees Fahrenheit, and, with an alert of two wildfires in the area, there couldn’t have been a more vivid reminder of the importance of water security for our residents at the ADIWS. So, I want to start with a very special thankyou to everyone who has contributed to our latest fundraiser to install state-of-the-art waste disposal and grey water recycling and filtration systems to conserve precious water.

Kiara eye surgery

It is over three years since the cataract on Kiara’s left eye began to significantly impact her vision and she now has very little, if any, vision in that eye. Our ADI Wildlife Sanctuary team constantly monitor for any inflammation and discomfort, so it can be treated quickly. Dr Peter Caldwell examined Kiara and believes she will need surgery in the new year to remove the eye. She is believed to be 15 years old, although the ages given by circuses are often suspect, as they try to hide the length of time they have been in possession of the animals. ADI rescued her from a circus in Peru ten years ago.

Muheeb weight loss investigated

Last week, Dr Caldwell sedated Muheeb (one of the #Kuwait6 lions) at ADIWS, and took blood, urine and fecal samples following concern that although he is eating, he appears to be losing weight. He has previously had his regular internal and external parasite treatments. So, we await the test results. As Muheeb was an illegal pet before being taken in by Kuwait Zoo, we have limited health background.
