Horse & donkey veterinary treatment

Once again, we saw the benefits of our new Non-Predator Reception Area (NPRA) at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary last week, when Dr Willem Dafue came to examine horse Sammy and donkey Jack.

Sammy arrived at ADIWS with an injured fetlock and Dr Dafue (and previously Dr Eksteen) is managing this, and ensuring he has the best possible life since his rescue. Dr Dafue examined the fetlock and treated a wound on Sammy’s back, which looked like he had been rubbing or pushing against a tree.

It was also time to castrate young Jack, one of our herd of ten donkeys. There are many mistreated donkeys in South Africa, and we want to help as many as possible, so like all true sanctuaries we have a ‘no breeding’ policy. Jack recovered quickly and was soon back with the herd and enjoyed another glorious sunset, wandering their 455-acre home.

The NPRA paddocks proved perfect for bringing in the donkeys and containing Sammy for the veterinary visit. Even with animals that usually wander around the ADIWS freely, it is very important to have facilities where we can get close for veterinary procedures. So, thank you to everyone who supported the construction of the NPRA – it’s not quite finished yet and is already vital!
