Tomas and Kimba back together! Tomas returned to the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary yesterday after major surgery by Dr Peter Caldwell at Old Chapel Veterinary Clinic. After spending the night in separate rooms in their house, although able to make contact through the mesh, the boys were properly reunited today.
Dr Caldwell removed part of Tomas’ bowel after part of the gut had become wrapped around itself and his health deteriorated rapidly. The operation appears to have been a success, however, the boys will remain in their feeding camp for a while to ensure Tomas does not over exert himself and to encourage them to sleep in the house on these winter nights. Tomas is looking a little thin after his illness, but is eating enthusiastically, so we will steadily build him up.
The brothers were born in a Guatemalan circus but Tomas was sent to a zoo. ADI rescued Kimba from the circus (following the country’s ban on animal circuses) and then the zoo surrendered Tomas to ADI. We reunited them at ADIWS and they have since been inseparable and were clearly not happy being apart while Tomas was in hospital.
Huge thanks to everyone who has been sending well wishes for Tomas, it is great to see him back with Kimba.
