We are heartbroken to bring news that our lovely lion Muheeb has cancer, it is a diffused intestinal lymphoma and surgery is not possible due to its spread along the intestine.
There is no cure, and Dr Caldwell advises this condition is not uncommon in animals of 4-5 years of age where their previous life can have an impact on their health. Muheeb also has genetic problems (an examination last year revealed he has abnormally formed feet and brittle claws). At this stage, MUHEEB IS NOT IN PAIN, he is not suffering and is still enjoying his quality of life. However, it is inevitable that his health will deteriorate and he will lose weight. We have decided to bring Muheeb back to the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary, with care and medication as needed, to allow him to enjoy his best possible life for the coming weeks or months. He will have all the toys and treats he wants, the company of his Kuwait family next door and can join in the daily roars of the ADIWS residents. Muheeb will be closely monitored by us and Dr Caldwell to ensure that he remains comfortable for as long as possible. Dr Caldwell is planning the best way to help him and Muheeb will be coming home this week and we will let you know when he is back.
Muheeb was an illegal trophy pet in Kuwait and came to the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary, South Africa, in May last year with five other rescued lions taken in by Kuwait Zoo after they were no longer wanted. It is heartbreaking and unfair that this lovely boy’s time at home where he belongs will be cut short. Sadly, it is the nature of animal rescue that we sometimes face this kind of heartache when so much damage has been done in their earlier lives, from inbreeding, malnutrition, stress, and severe confinement. Playful Muheeb had been likened to Ruben who arrived with us from Armenia with very serious health issues, but, like Muheeb, clearly seized on every new experience and toy with a special joy, making the most of his happiness. Perhaps they somehow knew to make the most of every moment. We are grateful for that.
We are all devastated at ADI and know everyone rooting for Muheeb will feel the same. We will continue to do everything we can for this magnificent lion and give him as much time and enjoyment as possible. Please keep Muheeb in your hearts, and remember his joy at being free, in the land of his ancestors.
